Coffee · Brazil Arabica

Minas Gerais and São Paulo grow most of the world's arabica, and the market trades two windows above all: June–August freeze risk in the highlands, and the September–October flowering rains that set the next crop. A dry blow at flowering shows up in the futures curve within days.

The Forecast Network's ERA5 multivariate ENSO index (the series behind celsius.earth/enso); positive is El Niño-like. Monthly means arrive about six weeks after the month; the provisional month is ERA5T and may still move.

Near-normal stays paper; sea and no-data carry no ink; rainfall percent is unpainted where the weekly normal is under 2 mm. Cells are honest — drawn at the data's own resolution.

What the desk watches
  • September–October rainfall onset: flowering needs a soaking followed by steady moisture; a false start that aborts blossoms is the bull story.
  • Cold-outbreak depth during the frost season — radiative frosts in the highlands are hyper-local but the airmass is not.
  • Dry-season carryover soil moisture from the ledger's SEAS5 soil fields.
Climate drivers

La Niña dries the Brazilian coffee spring and sharpens frost risk; El Niño generally favors the flowering rains. The 2021 frost-plus-drought season is the modern benchmark for how fast this desk can reprice.
